Asking for "More Work" at Your Internship: Questions to Keep in Mind

As the summer comes to the mid-way point, students engaging in a wide variety of internship have begun contacting me asking one simple question, "how do I ask for more work?" Although I would love to provide a one-size-fits-all answer, I cannot.

Here are 5 questions to consider if you are thinking about asking this question:

  1. Are you really looking for more work, or are you looking for a different type of work?
  2. Are you sure you have done the best-possible job on the tasks you have currently assigned?
  3. In asking for more work, what are you hoping to gain?
  4. Do you have an idea of the type of work you would like to be engaged in?
  5. Who is the best person to ask?
These guiding questions will help you feel better-prepared. Always remember, whenever we ask a question, we have to be ready to listen to the answer.

Good luck!
